XTC on the other hand is almost a total conversion. So if you like what XRM does, but feel as though there's more to the game that can be changed/improved, you can throw even more scripts and mods on top of it to get the game just how you want it and the entire setup will still be (relatively) stable. It has fewer technical problems (it's a mod like any other, though, so it has its share of bugs) and many, many more compatible third-party modifications (so I guess at this point they would be third-third-party mods?) pretty much any script compatible with vanilla TC/AP can run alongside XRM just fine. This may sound like something of a downside, but XRM is generally much more stable and reliable than XTC. They're very noticeable tweaks with profound effects on gameplay dynamics, but the game as a whole is still just a variation on the original X3TC/AP formula. XRM is basically vanilla X3 with some tweaks. It depends on how much of a different experience you want from the original game, as well as how much personalized modding you want to do after you have the base package installed. So for the TL:DR, Xtended's better for pirates and non-combatatants, while those who want to work with a race and fight a lot will probably enjoy XRM more. At the moment though, XRM's more customizable. Also, racial weapons have more variety in XRM, as while the colors changed in Xtended, most weapon types were essentially one default type availiable to most of a class (HEPT on M3's for instance) and six others that were slightly better, but roughly the same to each other.Īlso, XRM currently has more mods that work with it, and that's probably going to stay true, but there seems to be a fair amount being worked on for Xtended too. Those who want to make money from combat will also probably enjoy the bounty system, as if you have a police license with a race any ship that kills that race's ship will give a bounty upon destruction. Also, weapon fire is usually faster, and ship size is not quite as vital as in Xtended, which means smaller ships have a good chance against larger ships when piloted by the player. It works on AP, which means it runs slightly better, and the speeds are increased on many ships, causing M3's to be 200-300 speed on average, while Xtended is at the default speeds. On the other hand, for those who like combat, especially fighter combat, XRM is probably better. Also, there are more sectors outside of racial control that you can move through after the universe starts opening up. Additionally, the ability to make any ship bail and the boost to equipment drop rates makes piracy more lucrative before the level you'd need marines. Similarly, I suggest Xtended for pirates(but not yaki) You can make all pirates friendly, and they seem to place a lot more pirate bases all around. Between the ability to make all pirates friendly and the extended salvaging options (Shields/weapons drop more often from wrecks, and ships can bail when hit by anyone, not just the player, allowing for you to swoop in after a big battle and collect). If you prefer to be a relatively combat-free type, I suggest Xtended. Sorry to ressurect this thread, but having played a ton of both (and because I'm currently reinstalling x3 at a wopping speed of 200kbs a second), I have my own opinions.īoth mods are good, and add in a lot of new ships/strategies for combat, but there are some pretty big differences overall, particularly for playstyle.
